Sara Sozzani Maino, is the Deputy Editor In Chief at Vogue Italia and a passionate advocate of sustainable fashion.
In her role as the founder and head of Vogue Talents, she actively scouts for the next generation of designers from different parts of the world and awards their creativity with global recognition.
In India, Sara Sozzani Maino in collaboration with Shivang Dhruva of FAD International hosted and judged the second edition of #ScoutingForIndia program along with the renowned Haute Couture designer Sabyasachi, celebrated fashion director of Vogue India Anaita Shroff Adjania, lifestyle journalist & sustainability activist Bandana Tewari and Editor of Paper Magazine Mickey Boardman as the high profile juries. The winner Anvita Sharma of twopointtwostudio will showcase her collection at Milan Fashion Week to be held next September.
Her slender posture, beamish countenance and a natural tuft of black curly hair grips charisma as she maneuvres her charm in a buzzing celebration at SoHo House Mumbai donning a stunning black and white two-piece formal ensemble.
I approach her as she candidly opens up about her favorite Italian author, responsible (sustainable) fashion, next-generation talent, modern media and of course Vogue.
What is your favorite magazine apart from Vogue?
None. I don’t have favorite magazines. I see many magazines and a lot of them are interesting.
What is the best and the worst part of being an editor?
I don’t see the worst part. I think being an editor, I simply do a job I love while cherishing that when you become a public personality and are taken as an example by the new generation you always have to be responsible for giving positive messages.
If you wrote an article about your visit to India what would you write in it?
I’ve been to India a few times but I decided to do this event (#ScoutingFor India) to support a new generation of Indian designers. India is a beautiful country and there’s a lot to see. So if I’ve to write an article about my visit to India it would be about believing in the new generation of Indian creators.
What according to you makes Italy stand out more than other countries in Europe and the world?
Well, each country is special by itself and likewise, Italy has a unique culture and history that other countries do not have. Over and above that if you speak about fashion and the quality of ‘Made In Italy’ — it’s not repeatable in other countries.
Who’s your favorite Italian Writer world should take notice of?
Niccolò Ammaniti is a good writer.
What is your best Vogue moment?
Every moment is special while I’ve worked for 24 years. I can remember many memories and so its difficult to talk about one favorite point of time.
What fashion journalism should truly focus on in 21st century?
You’ve to send important messages. The media has the responsibility of giving important messages to consumers. Right now our principal responsibility is sustainability.
Most important habits of a happy and successful person?
You’ve to continue to believe what you do. You’ve got to be passionate and constant (in what you do).
